This is exactly why we have selected some of the most beautiful places with top restaurants in the inner courtyard and cozy cafés to recommend them to you!

Fähnrichhof – one of Vienna's enchanting inner courtyards

Blutgasse in the city center | accessible at any time

According to legend, Templars should have set up their quarters here. The complex with one of Vienna's enchanting inner courtyards belongs to the adjoining Nikolaikloster and has existed since the 16th century. This inner courtyard invites you on a travel back in time to the Middle Ages and is little known, despite its central location in the first district of Vienna.

Our tip: Visit a neighboring coffee house, such as Café Bogner or Café Renaissance, to soak up the atmosphere there.

City walk through the inner courtyards of Blutgasse

Blood Alley 3 | accessible at any time

A typical Pawlatschenhaus from the 17th century reveals itself in “Blutgasse” number three. What are pawlats? This word comes from Czech and describes the typical wooden balconies that used to serve as entrances to houses. The romantic inner courtyard in a historic ambience directly behind St. Stephen's Cathedral is worth a visit!

Despite its central location, the inner courtyard is only known to a few and is an insider tip off the beaten track. Here you will discover a true oasis of calm - just a few meters away from the hustle and bustle of Stephansplatz.

Schlossquadrat – culinary square

Schlossgasse 21 in Margateten | daily from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m

Four excellent restaurants meet in the inner courtyard of Vienna Margareten in the palace square. The Silberwirt inn, the Pizzeria Margareta, the steak restaurant Gergely's and the Café Cuadro. Together they form the centre of the historic inner courtyard, the roots of which go back to the 14th century. Margareten Castle nestles all around with the castle garden, which once served as a mulberry school for Vienna's city gardens. Today it is a place of social activity away from the tourist hotspots.
